| Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity | Cemetery groups have sources of funding that are finite or unpredictable: property (graves, crypts, niches), services (opening/closing graves), ancillary programs (flowers, Christmas wreaths), and annual appeal donations. Most cemeteries sold property over centuries in which property prices varied from $10-$2000/grave. The expectation is that the $10 grave purchased in 1860 will help maintain the cemetery in perpetuity. While a small portion of the property sale is invested in a permanent maintenance fund, these funds have often not been invested wisely over decades and current revenue sources are often insufficient in meeting the rising costs of maintaining the cemetery, including landscaping, tree removal, road paving, maintenance of burial plots, and staff salaries. This can create financial strain and make it difficult for the group to adequately care for the cemetery and meet its financial obligations. And because we are a religious cemetery group, we are not regulated by the NYS Division of Cemeteries, which excludes us from applying for grants and funding available to other cemeteries to help repair/replace damaged monuments and markers. Monuments and markers are actually personal property owned by the lot holder, so once all family members are deceased or unreachable, we have no recourse or funding for repairs.

| Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required | 1. Develop a long-term financial plan: Create a comprehensive financial plan that outlines the current and future financial needs of Albany Diocesan Cemeteries. This plan should include projections for revenue sources, expenses, and investments to ensure the cemetery's financial sustainability in perpetuity. 2. Diversify revenue sources: Explore alternative revenue sources such as hosting events, offering additional services (e.g., cremation services, mausoleum construction), and fundraising campaigns to supplement traditional revenue streams. Diversifying revenue sources can help reduce reliance on a single income stream and provide a more stable financial foundation. 3. Implement cost-saving measures: Identify opportunities to reduce expenses without compromising the quality of services provided by the cemetery group. This could include negotiating contracts with vendors, implementing energy-efficient practices, and optimizing staffing levels to minimize operating costs. 4. Seek partnerships and collaborations: Explore partnerships with other local organizations, businesses, or government agencies to share resources, expertise, and costs related to cemetery maintenance. Collaborations can help alleviate financial burdens and enhance the sustainability of the cemetery group. 5. Engage with the community: Foster a strong sense of community engagement and support for the cemetery group through outreach, education, and volunteer opportunities. Building strong relationships with the community can increase donations, foster goodwill, and ensure the long-term viability of the cemetery.

| Project Synopsis: Expected Results | This project would be a success if we can stretch out our current finite revenue streams, stabilize the unpredictable revenue streams and identify new revenue generating opportunities. We are looking for a plan that creates positive projections in our ability to maintain the cemetery for the next 100 years (which is the industry benchmark for sustainability).
