Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
As an emerging 501c(3) non-profit organization, The Inteleos Foundation (IF) has been working on improving global healthcare systems through healthcare technology and innovation. One of the challenges Inteleos Foundation faces is creating and building everything from scratch and establishing the organizational infrastructure to reach our potential donors, volunteers, and partners. Understanding and navigating legal, regulatory, and compliance requirements of a global non-profit organization is complex and time-consuming for a small staff. We would like support in drafting policy and processes, leading risk analyses, and ensuring proper compliance in receiving and granting funds to and from the organization.
To achieve our mission, the IF operates four signature programs:
  1. Medical Missions: a granting opportunity to global NGOs with healthcare teams that can design and deploy a project that will advance their healthcare system through ultrasound.
  2. Scholarships: one-time financial assistance grants to healthcare professionals to support their advanced education in healthcare technology.
  3. Ambassador Accelerator: an elite program of healthcare leaders who each represent their national healthcare interests, and design innovative impact projects to integrate advanced technology into their local communities.
  4. Ultrasound Proficiency Grand Challenge: A series of pilot projects in developing nations that engage local stakeholders to develop, drive, and evaluate training programs for local clinicians, specifically targeting maternal-fetal health practitioners.
Each of the four signature programs do require unique legal, regulatory, and compliance requirements apart from the essential documents and processes. For an example, it is critical to map the entire process of giving scholarships and grants to an international healthcare professional. With each step, the IF requires to address indemnity clauses, mitigate risks in financial processes to transfer money to a different country or region, and be in compliance with local data and privacy laws of the grantee.
Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
  • Project Planning: We would like to define the project’s objectives, scope, and deliverables as the first step on our onboarding meeting. This would require our team to go over and explain each of the signature programs so that your team of students can start process-mapping of our signature programs using design thinking. The scope and deliverables of each of our signature programs would be then easier to define once we have the process maps.
  • Research and Assessment: We are expecting your team of students to conduct a thorough review of relevant laws, regulations, and especially best practices that apply to the non-profit's activities. After identifying relevant laws, regulations, and best practices specific to processes of our signature programs, we would like to work together to assess IF’s current compliance status and identify any gaps or areas of concern.
  • Developing Procedures and Policies: We would like to develop and update IF’s policies and procedures to reflect legal requirements and industry best practices. This may include documentation of specific policies of conflict of interest, non-competition, data-protection, creating a checklist for future signature programs.
Project Synopsis: Expected Results
The first key deliverable we are looking to accomplish is to create policies and procedures for each of our 4 signature programs to ensure ethical, equitable service delivery, clear objectives and measurable impact, and proper compliance for both funders and program participants. For the second deliverable, we also need to develop clear fundraising (internal flow) and funding (external flow) procedures. As a Foundation, we will both be receiving incoming revenue and giving grants/scholarships outward, so it is critical to have a formalized workflow for both processes.
